HTTPS is a highly secured connection standard, and all email traffic between the browser and the Yahoo servers is fully encrypted so as not to steal information from the bad guys. This is a very common security standard and is used by many companies.
Yahoo has been slow to integrate HTTPS, before that, Google has provided HTTPS as a non-mandatory option to users since 2008 and turned it into default since 2010. Hotmail offers this option from 2010 and also for it to default two years later. Yahoo has offered this option only earlier this year. However, it is still late, though. Note that early HTTPS connections will only support the webmail version. If you use Yahoo Mail on your phone and tablet, they do not support HTTPS.
